Exiting Stealth Mode: How to Launch Your Biotech Digital Presence Without Leaking IP
You need to attract talent and capital, which means saying something real about the technology. You need to protect the technology, which means not saying too much. The platform page is where that tension gets resolved, or mishandled.
Stealth mode ends the moment you need something from the outside world that stealth prevents you from getting. Usually that is talent, a senior scientist who will not leave a stable position for a company they can learn nothing about, or capital, investors beyond the initial circle who need to understand what you are building. Emerging from stealth is not a marketing event. It is a deliberate decision to become legible to people you want, while staying opaque to people you do not, including competitors who would happily learn how your technology works.
The platform or technology page is where this balance is struck. It is the page a prospective hire studies to decide whether the science is exciting enough to justify the risk, the page an investor reads to gauge whether the approach is differentiated, and, unavoidably, the page a competitor reads to figure out what you are doing. It has to satisfy the first two without giving the third anything useful. That is a genuine design problem, and it is one that a builder who does not understand the science cannot solve, because they cannot tell which sentence is a compelling generality and which one quietly hands a competitor your approach.
Separate what is protected from what is disclosable
The first move is to know, precisely, what you are protecting and by what mechanism. Some of your technology is covered by filed patents, which means it is either already public or on a path to becoming public, and referencing it costs you nothing. Some is the subject of unfiled applications, where premature public disclosure can genuinely damage your position. And some is held as trade secret, protected only by not being revealed, where the entire value depends on it staying off the page.
These categories demand completely different handling, and the difference is invisible to a generalist. Published patent material can be discussed freely and even cited as evidence of a defensible position. Trade secrets have to be described only by their effect, never their method. Getting this wrong in either direction is costly: disclose a trade secret and you may lose it, or over-redact something already public and you look evasive about work that is safely protected. Sorting the technology into these buckets, ideally alongside your patent counsel, is the foundation everything else builds on.
Communicate value through effect, not method
The technique that resolves most of the tension is describing what your technology achieves rather than how it achieves it. You can state that your platform detects a class of targets with a particular sensitivity, or that your approach solves a problem that has limited existing methods, without revealing the specific chemistry, architecture, or process that makes it work. A prospective hire and an investor mostly want to know that the capability is real and meaningful. That can be established through outcomes, validation, and the problem being solved, none of which require exposing the method.
This is a more sophisticated form of communication than either full disclosure or vague hand-waving, and it is where scientific fluency is decisive. The person writing has to understand the technology deeply enough to know exactly where the protected core sits, so they can describe everything around it richly while leaving that core untouched. Someone without that understanding tends to fail in one of two directions: they either stay so generic the page says nothing, or they wander into specifics without realizing they have crossed a line that matters. The line is only visible to someone who knows the science.
Technical depth and IP protection are not opposites
Founders often frame this as a tradeoff: the more you protect the IP, the less compelling the page, and vice versa. Handled well, that tradeoff is far softer than it appears. A page can be technically rich, credible to an expert, and genuinely exciting to a potential hire while disclosing nothing that helps a competitor. The depth comes from precision about the problem, honesty about what has been demonstrated, and correct use of the relevant scientific language, none of which requires revealing the protected method. What reads as depth is command of the subject, not disclosure of the secret.
The failure case is the page that tries to seem impressive by gesturing at proprietary breakthroughs in language so vague it convinces no one, while a careful competitor still extracts a usable hint from an incautious phrase. That is the worst of both outcomes: unpersuasive to your real audience and leaky to the one you were guarding against. Avoiding it requires judgment about each specific claim, which is exactly what a science-literate builder brings to the work.

Done properly, you come out of stealth looking more formidable, not less, because a page that is both open and disciplined signals a team that knows precisely what it has and precisely how to protect it.
